Girl Scouts of Nassau County is proud to present the 2014 Girls Go the Distance Walkathon and Activity Fair Patch!


This year’s patch, designed with exercise and healthy choices in mind, was a combination of two different patch designs, refined into one patch. The patch features a Girl Scout outside on a sunny day drinking water and being active.  The patch also features this year’s name of the event, date and location.  Doesn’t it look great?

Congratulations to the winners of the 2014 Girls Go the Distance Patch Contest! The winning designers are: Alexa and Mia from Junior Troop 3364 and Samantha from Cadette Troop 3289

Girls Go The Distance Walkathon and Activity Fair is a fun and interactive two mile walk and activity fair centered on the theme of Healthy Living. Registered Girl Scout Troops will have the opportunity to earn a “give back” for their own Healthy Living projects.

All funds generated from the Walkathon and Activity Fair will benefit Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Healthy Living Initiatives program. Healthy Living Initiatives brings a unique perspective to keeping girls healthy. In order for girls to live healthy, they first have to learn how, and have fun doing it. Funding is needed to help GSNC develop and provide engaging activities that inspire girls to learn how to integrate all aspects of healthy living into their daily lives.

This year’s Walkathon will be held on Sunday, April 27 from 9:30am to 1:00pm at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. For more information, please visit the GSNC Walkathon Webpage at gsnc.kintera.org/walk

So, when we were challenged to make a sit-upon, we decided to do what Girl Scouts do and use our resources wisely... so, we used some items that we had on hand. Here is what we came up with: Supplies needed : Scissors Already read newspaper Reusable shopping bag Duct tape (we used gold glitter duct tape of course, but an type of duct tape will do) Instructions: Cut the sewed seams of the reusable shopping bag.  Lay the reusable bag out flat (waterproof/plastic side down) and place the newspaper on one half of the laid out bag as shown.  Fold the other side of the bag over the newspaper so that the newspaper is sandwiched between the two sides of the reusable shopping bag. Working at a Girl Scout Camp by Maggie Robinson

Of all the different first jobs a young person could have, summer camp counselor is simply the best. Other regular jobs won’t leave a young person with as well-rounded a skill set as summer camp and in my (incredibly-biased) opinion, being a Girl Scout summer camp counselor is even better for introducing young minds to the workforce. Growing up I had two dreams: become a world famous best-selling author and be a Unit Leader at Camp Blue Bay. Thanks to my experience working at summer camp, I’ve already been able to achieve one of my lifelong goals! (And as soon as I finish my novel, I’ll complete the other one…)  It all started 15 years ago. I was 8 years old and enjoying the sleepaway experience at Camp Blue Bay for the very first time, but my camp counselors were an enigma to me.
