“Music Meets Science” Computer Music Series

DO YOU LOVE MUSIC? Would you like to create your own music using a computer?  Last year, Girl Scouts of Nassau County created a new S.T.E.M. related program that revolved around the world of Music Technology. Using wireless tablets and laptops, girls created, recorded, manipulated and synthesized sounds to create their own songs, remixes and sound collages. Girls who completed the program not only found it fun, but 71 percent of the girls who participated learned more about music and 86 percent of the girls learned more about technology.

The “Music Meets Science” Computer Music Series introduces a whole new world of Music to Junior Girl Scouts. It allows them to explore fun ways to interact with music and sound, all while learning about math and new technology; it makes learning math fun. By the end of the series, each of the girls composed a three minute MP3 recording of their original music that they could share with their friends and family.

We, at the GSNC Service Center, loved this program because it livened up the office. Not only did we have the pleasure of seeing girls around the office, but we also were able to hear the music that they were creating.

At the conclusion of the series, girls completed 4 of the 5 requirements for the Girl Scout Junior "Musician" Badge.
